Someone tell the lawyers and the MBAs to sit the fuck down

And while you’re at it, tell them to shut the fuck up.

Here’s the thing:

Last night, I embedded a YouTube video on my blog. The video was of a band, playing a song I liked.

Since I liked the song, I wanted to share it. I also wrote a short comment to go with the video. The comment was sincere. It was also, let’s say, positively glowing. That is, it was exactly what someone who is selling a product could hope for a consumer of their product to say.

But if you tried to watch the video, you got this:

So I went and changed the embed link to the video. Instead of embedding via the “official channel”, I’m now embedding this video via some random unaffiliated YouTube user’s account.

Congratulations, corporate record label. You lost a link to one of your online presences.

This is just dumb. “Embedding Disabled” means “Uh, nevermind.” Unless I already care, it’s not worth the effort. If you’re in business, why would you create obstacles for people to care about what you’re selling?

The record label isn’t protecting their IP — they’re preventing people from giving a damn about their product.
